1950s Prairie Style Exterior

In this award-winning project, we transformed the sterile exterior of a 1950s ranch house into one with older home character that reflects the cachet of its prestigious neighborhood. Borrowing from the Prairie Style, we made a statement with a prominent front porch and siding, and window and paint details that break up the façade and add interest. The substantial porch also adds useable outdoor space, including a garden shed below.

A remodel like this one relies on fine craftsmanship for its success. We focused on authentic details like the trim on the porch columns, wood caps for the stair railing, the trellis over the garage doors, shingling that matches that at the rear of the home, and the continuous window band that ties the porch and windows together.

Knowing that [the front porch] would be the focal point of the house, we wanted only the finest artisans in all of Portland to bring the old porch back to life – this had become a labor of love!  My daughter, a landscape architect, researched several local design firms, and after meeting with Wade Freitag, decided that Craftsman Design and Renovation was clearly the one for the job.
