Consumer Homecare Information

On the Web
Island County Resources In-Home Care
Lists some in-home care support resources, including the invaluable Senior Information and Assistance offices.
United Way Resource Guide for Island County
A more extensive listing of Whidbey Island resources, not just those for in-home care support.
Caregiver's Handbook
Very good information on a variety of practical topics from the San Diego Mental Health Services.
ONCOLINK: Cancer Information for Consumers
If every disease had a site as good as this one from the University of Pennsylvania, we'd never need to go off-line for information. If you need homecare but don't have cancer, this site still offers lots of useful articles.
Alzheimer's Association
Lots of good information about Alzheimer's, including information and suggestions for caregivers.
Consumer Information from the National Institute of Health
Your tax dollars at work. This is a great site. Highlights one of the things the NIH does best, which is: pick a common medical problem that gets treated a lot of different ways, assemble a group of the very best experts on the subject, have them gather together ALL the research and information,  and come up with some clear, simple guidelines for consumers and medical professionals to follow. They write up the information for consumers in a clear, non-technical manner. Their pamphlets on urinary incontinence in women and cancer pain control are fabulous.
Avoiding Fraud When Buying Long-Term Care Insurance: A Guide For Consumers and Their Families
Well-written, very detailed (may be too detailed for some) article on the pitfalls awaiting the purchaser of long-term care insurance.
The Official Government Medicare Site
Put out by the government, of course.
Information in Books

There are hundred of good books on this subject. Ask the librarian, look in the catalog, or browse your library shelves in the vicinity of 649.8.  Or go to Amazon and use "caregiving" as a search term.

Information By Phone
Your local Senior Information and Assistance office
This is the most important resource you have, and it's free. Senior I&A's, as they are called, can help you problem solve and connect to other services. If your parent is low-income, this is where you can find out if they qualify for state and federal programs that provide caregivers at low or no cost. They also know about other programs such as Meals on Wheels.
