Organization History and Goals

The Market Foundation (www.pikeplacemarketfoundation.org) was formed in 1982 to “preserve and enhance the traditions and diversity of the Pike Place Market community.” We accomplish our mission by raising funds to support the four human service agencies and low-income housing all located within the 9 acre Pike Place Market historical district. The service agencies for low-income people which we support are: the Downtown Food Bank, Pike Market Senior Center, Pike Market Childcare & Preschool and Pike Market Medical Clinic. Today, nearly 10,000 low-income seniors and families living and working in downtown Seattle depend on the Market’s social service agencies to meet their basic and vital needs for housing, food, medical care, child care, employment and companionship.

Since 1982, the Market Foundation has contributed over $16 million to the Market’s four human service agencies - 40%-70% of the private funding needed to meet their annual operating budgets – each of which provide a unique and essential lifeline service to Seattle’s low-income population.
